General:
Perennial herb from a thick stem-base; stems ascending to erect, glabrous or stiff-hairy towards the base, purplish glandular hairy above, branched, 20-80 cm tall.
Leaves:
Basal leaves rounded in outline, 6-14 cm wide, long-stalked, palmately divided 3/4 their length into 5-7 irregularly lobed segments; stem leaves opposite, unstalked, reduced above.
Flowers:
Inflorescence of 1 to 2 axillary or stalked terminal and axillary flowers; petals white to pink, with purple veins, broadly rounded at the tips, soft-hairy on the lower 1/2 of the inner surface, 12-17 mm long; sepals 6-11 mm long, bristle-tipped, the tip 1.5-2 mm long; stamens 10, fertile, not fused.
Fruits:
Carpels, stiff-hairy; styles 1.5-2.5 cm long, the beak 2-4 mm long; seeds oblong, coarsely net-veined.

Habitat / Range

Moist to mesic meadows and open forests in the lowland to subalpine zones; frequent in BC east of the Coast-Cascade Mountains, rare in the Queen Charlotte Islands; N to YT and NT, E to SW SK and S to SD, NM and CA.
